Getting to #1 is a function of one thing: total bid amount, compared to everyone else's.

Topping up an existing listing

If you're already listed but not on top, you don't start over. Enter the exact same URL or @handle again and add to your bid — it stacks onto your existing total.

Taking the crown

To specifically take #1, your new total must exceed the current leader's total by at least $5. That $5 buffer exists so the top spot doesn't flip on a rounding error — you have to genuinely outbid, not just tie.
